A quadratic envelope from one midpoint
Log-Concave Sampling / Optimisation · natural-language: L2 / lean: L2 (author-assigned; calibration pending)
Why this difficulty?
One midpoint mechanism plus scalar rearrangement; the natural-language view additionally distinguishes the envelope from normalization.
Editorial review and exact formal-coverage boundary
AI editorial review accepted after a separately reviewed correction. This is not canonical theorem publication, full Lean coverage or empirical difficulty calibration.
- The finite-dimensional Lebesgue-measure Gaussian domination argument, evaluation of the Gaussian integral, measurability, and positivity of the Gibbs normalizer are explanatory mathematics, not conclusions of the supplied Lean reference.
- The convexity of V(x)=|x| at k=0, its failure to have a positive global strong-convexity modulus, and the explicit integral of exp(-|x|) equal to 2 are not proved by the supplied Lean reference.
- Any separate derivation of the k/2 envelope remains outside the supplied midpoint proof and its formal conclusion.

Assumptions and conventions
- \(E\) is a real normed vector space; \(V:E\to\mathbb R\); \(x_0\) is an attained global minimizer; \(k\) is real.
- Use the following strong-convexity convention (also used by Mathlib): on all of \(E\), for \(a,b\ge0\) with \(a+b=1\), \[V(ax+by)\le aV(x)+bV(y)-\tfrac k2 ab\|x-y\|^2.\]
- No differentiability or finite-dimensionality assumption is made.
Natural-language question
Use only the midpoint instance and global minimality to prove \(V(x)\ge V(x_0)+\tfrac k4\|x-x_0\|^2\) for every x. Track the constant. Does this proof establish the sharper k/2 envelope, or finiteness of a Gibbs normalizer?
Reference mathematical proof
At \(m=(x_0+x)/2\), strong convexity gives \[V(m)\le\tfrac12V(x_0)+\tfrac12V(x)-\tfrac k8\|x-x_0\|^2.\] The factor \(k/8\) comes from \((k/2)(1/2)(1/2)\).
Global minimality gives \(V(x_0)\le V(m)\). Combine the two inequalities and multiply by 2 to obtain \(V(x_0)+\tfrac k4\|x-x_0\|^2\le V(x)\). No derivative or limit was used.
This midpoint calculation proves the k/4 envelope, not the sharper k/2 constant. Obtaining a sharper result needs another argument; it must not be credited to this calculation.
The envelope alone is not a normalization theorem. One sufficient route assumes \(k>0\), a finite-dimensional Euclidean space with Lebesgue reference measure and measurable V, then compares \(exp(-V)\) with an integrable Gaussian and separately checks positivity of the normalizer. These are conditions for that route, not necessary conditions for every Gibbs normalization: on \(\mathbb{R}\), V(x)=|x| is convex with \(k=0\) and \(exp(-|x|)\) has integral 2.
How the Lean proof follows these steps
StrongConvexOn contains a convex-domain component and a two-point inequality; hV.2 selects the latter. IsMinOn on univ is expanded to compare the minimizer with every point. The midpoint coefficients are checked by norm_num, the squared distance is rewritten symmetrically, and nlinarith performs the final scalar rearrangement.

What this does—and does not—verify
This is a normed-vector-space statement, not a Riemannian or geodesic-convexity theorem. The Lean target proves the k/4 envelope only; neither the sharper bound nor Gibbs normalization is supplied.
Existing library mathematics reused; no new mathematical leaf or paper-completion credit. The editorial panel records the exact current review scope and remaining unformalized explanation.
