From a selected-curve chord inequality to its first-order bound

Riemannian Optimisation / Statistical Optimal Transport · natural-language: L3 / lean: L3 (author-assigned; calibration pending)

Why this difficulty?

Coordinate a positive-time quotient, eventual interval membership, a genuine scalar derivative restricted to a right filter, continuity of an upper envelope and preservation of inequalities under limits. Audit which geometric gradient/velocity identifications are absent. No level is empirically calibrated.

Editorial review and exact formal-coverage boundary

AI editorial review accepted after a separately reviewed correction. This is not canonical theorem publication, full Lean coverage or empirical difficulty calibration.

  • Formal coverage remains the supplied selected-curve scalar endpoint inequality only. Curve existence for arbitrary endpoints, constant-speed geodesicity, and identification of the scalar derivative with a Riemannian or Wasserstein gradient pairing are not supplied by this target.
  • The explanatory audit of totalized derivatives and any possible one-sided replacement API is prose rather than an additional formal conclusion; the actual HasDerivAt premise is retained unchanged.
  • The sign comparison and negative-alpha example used to assess this wording repair are mathematical review evidence, not additional Lean theorems or evidence of empirical difficulty calibration. No compiler replay or publication status is asserted.

Content-bound review status and evidence hashes · Independent reports and frozen inputs. Historical rejected wording is audit material, not training gold.

Assumptions and conventions

  • M is a metric space, \(F:M\to \mathbb{R}\), \(α\in \mathbb{R}\), and P selects curves \(γ:\mathbb{R}\to M\). For every selected curve and \(0\le t\le 1\) assume \[F(\gamma(t))\le(1-t)F(\gamma(0))+tF(\gamma(1))-\frac{\alpha t(1-t)}2d(\gamma(0),\gamma(1))^2.\] The predicate P itself does not certify geodesicity, speed, regularity or existence of curves between all endpoints.
  • A particular \(γ\) with \(P(γ)\) is supplied. The scalar composition \(φ(t)=F(γ(t))\) has the genuine two-sided derivative \(φ′(0)=g\). Neither a Riemannian/Wasserstein gradient nor a logarithmic map is supplied. \(α\) may have either sign.

Natural-language question

Prove \[F(\gamma(1))\ge F(\gamma(0))+g+\frac\alpha2d(\gamma(0),\gamma(1))^2.\] Show the positive-time quotient and its right-hand limit, retaining the exact constant. Explain why this does not itself identify g with a geometric gradient pairing or supply geodesics for arbitrary endpoint pairs. Is an arbitrary value returned by a totalized derivative enough to replace the differentiability hypothesis?

Reference mathematical proof
  1. Put \(D=d(\gamma(0),\gamma(1))^2\). For 0<t<1, subtract \(F(γ(0))\) from the chord bound and divide by the strictly positive t: \[\frac{\varphi(t)-\varphi(0)}t\le F(\gamma(1))-F(\gamma(0))-\frac\alpha2(1-t)D.\] No sign restriction on \(α\) is used, and division at \(t=0\) is not performed.

  2. The condition 0<t<1 holds eventually as t approaches 0 from the right. Genuine differentiability gives the restricted limit \[\lim_{t\downarrow0}\frac{\varphi(t)-\varphi(0)}t=g.\] The formal proof restricts HasDerivAt.tendsto_slope to the right-neighborhood filter; a defined-but-totalized slope value at zero is irrelevant.

  3. The upper envelope \(U(t)=F(\gamma(1))-F(\gamma(0))-\frac\alpha2(1-t)D\) is continuous at zero. Taking limits in the eventual ordered inequality gives \[g\le F(\gamma(1))-F(\gamma(0))-\frac\alpha2D.\] Rearranging proves the assertion with the exact coefficient \(α/2\).

  4. The proof uses the selected curve's chord inequality and scalar derivative only. It does not construct paths, prove that P encodes constant-speed geodesics, identify their velocities or define a gradient. An empty selection would make the global chord condition vacuous, but would not provide the required witness \(P(γ)\). To obtain a Riemannian or transport gradient statement one must separately identify the path derivative with the intended geometric pairing under that geometry's regularity hypotheses.

  5. A totalized derivative API returns some value even when a derivative does not exist. Merely assigning that value does not justify the slope limit. The local statement explicitly supplies HasDerivAt; its proof uses only the right restriction of that stronger assumption. A genuinely one-sided variant would need its own correctly stated API, not deletion of the current premise.

How the Lean proof follows these steps

The context supplies only the exact existing chord predicate. The reference constructs a scalar upper envelope, restricts hderiv.tendsto_slope to 𝓝[>]0, proves the quotient inequality eventually by positive division, and calls le_of_tendsto_of_tendsto before algebraic rearrangement. No source theorem or geometric gradient identity is imported as an answer. The Lean conclusion is the scalar endpoint inequality; the discussion about absent adapters is an explanation of its scope, not a new Riemannian/Wasserstein theorem.

Assessment rubric · 4 points
  1. Derives the exact chord quotient for strictly positive t with the \(α/2\) normalization and without assuming \(α\ge 0\). (1 point)
  2. Justifies eventual 0<t<1 and the right-hand slope limit from the genuine derivative hypothesis rather than a totalized value. (1 point)
  3. Passes the inequality to the limit using the continuous upper envelope and rearranges the exact endpoint bound. (1 point)
  4. Separates selected-curve/scalar facts from curve existence, constant-speed geodesicity and geometric gradient-pairing adapters, retaining the actual differentiability premise. (1 point)

What this does—and does not—verify

The supplied selector is not certified geometric data. No metric/geodesic existence, manifold regularity, Wasserstein first variation, subgradient existence, flow, sampling rate or invariance is concluded. HasDerivAt is retained exactly as in the source; no claim that all its hypotheses are mathematically minimal is made. The actual StrongConvexFirstOrder.firstOrder_lower_bound_of_strongConvexOn supplies an affine-segment/gradient adapter and consumes this limiting lemma.

Existing library mathematics reused; no new mathematical leaf or paper-completion credit. The editorial panel records the exact current review scope and remaining unformalized explanation.

Sources, graph location and dependencies

Original exercise over the existing ASTIS-owned scalar/geodesic limiting proof. Its module records Chewi Definition 1.3.26's chord normalization and the limiting mechanism behind display (1.4.7); this QA is an ASTIS restatement/explanation, not copied textbook wording or a claim that the full geometric statement is proved. The real local consumer is AutoSamplingTheory.TechnicalLemmas.Analysis.StrongConvexFirstOrder.firstOrder_lower_bound_of_strongConvexOn. No external dataset or restricted source is used.
