From Gibbs Poincaré to a directional covariance bound
Log-Concave Sampling / SampleWiki research problems · natural-language: L3 / lean: L3 (author-assigned; calibration pending)
Why this difficulty?
Coordinate genuine linear differentiation, two L2 interfaces, probability normalization, a Dirichlet-energy identity and covariance/variance conversion before dividing by the positive curvature. This is a multi-step proof, not an anisotropic Brascamp–Lieb theorem or research-level novelty claim.
Editorial review and exact formal-coverage boundary
AI editorial review accepted. This is not canonical theorem publication, full Lean coverage or empirical difficulty calibration.
- The aligned Lean statement certifies only the displayed directional covariance upper bound under the fixed premises. The reference proof verifies the stated intermediate facts, but arbitrary proofs of that target are not formally required to reproduce each explanatory step or earn the prose rubric points.
- The prose distinction between current API premises and mathematical necessity is editorially checked, not a Lean theorem proving lower-only sufficiency, necessity/non-necessity of upper curvature, or independent derivation of position L2. This target retains all of those actual API premises.
- The downstream SPHMC call and the restricted paper correspondence were separately inspected as source-facing context. This task does not formalize that entire consumer, the anisotropic Brascamp-Lieb theorem, smoothing regularity, invariance, sampling cost, or any sampler guarantee.
- Rubric adequacy and provisional track-specific L3 labels are independent editorial judgments, not formal consequences or measured model/human difficulty results. The supplied compiler receipt is a trusted-reference check only.
Content-bound review status and evidence hashes · Independent reports and frozen inputs. Historical rejected wording is audit material, not training gold.
Assumptions and conventions
- E is a finite-dimensional complete real inner-product space with its Borel measurable structure and volume measure, including the zero-dimensional case.
- \(W:E\to \mathbb{R}\) is \(C^{2}\). The density \(exp(-W)\) is integrable and its real normalizer \(Z=\int exp(-W)\) is strictly positive. Write \(μ(dx)=Z^{-1}exp(-W(x))dx\).
- Real constants satisfy \(0<m\le M\) and, for every x,a, \(m\|a\|^{2}\le D^{2}W(x)[a,a]\le M\|a\|^{2}\). The actual position map id is in \(L^{2}(μ)\). Retain both curvature bounds and this moment premise of the current source API.
- The imported Gibbs \(C^{1}\) Poincaré theorem gives m \(Varμ(f)\le \int \|\nabla f\|^{2}dμ\) for genuinely \(C^{1}\) observables with f and \(\nabla f\) in \(L^{2}(μ)\), under the displayed Gibbs hypotheses.
Natural-language question
Prove \(Covμ(a,a)\le \|a\|^{2}/m\) for every \(a\in E\), interpreting \(Covμ(a,a)\) as the covariance of the linear observable \(x\mapsto ⟨a,x⟩\) with itself. Establish its smoothness and \(L^{2}\) properties, evaluate its Dirichlet energy, and justify the covariance/variance identification. Separate premises of this current API from stronger claims about when moments or an upper curvature bound are mathematically necessary.
Reference mathematical proof
The density assumptions make \(μ\) the normalized Gibbs probability measure. This is used in the energy calculation; the notation tilted alone is not permission to treat an arbitrary totalized density expression as a probability measure.
For a fixed a, set \(f_{a}(x)=⟨a,x⟩\). The continuous linear functional is genuinely \(C^{1}\) with derivative \(v\mapsto ⟨a,v⟩\) and gradient a at every x. These derivative facts are proved from the continuous-linear-map API, not from a fallback value of totalized fderiv.
The supplied vector \(L^{2}\) hypothesis implies \(f_{a}\in L^{2}(μ)\), by continuity of inner product with a. The gradient is the constant vector a; a constant is in \(L^{2}\) of a probability measure. Thus both integrability interfaces of Gibbs \(C^{1}\) Poincaré have been checked.
Normalization and the constant gradient give the exact energy \[\mathcal E_\mu(f_a)=\int\|\nabla f_a(x)\|^2\,d\mu(x)=\|a\|^2.\] There is no hidden dimension factor.
With these \(L^{2}\) hypotheses, the actual covariance bilinear form satisfies \[\operatorname{Cov}_\mu(a,a)=\operatorname{Var}_\mu(f_a).\] The proof uses \(covarianceBilin_{self}\) followed by the integral formula for variance. The vector \(L^{2}\) hypothesis is important for interpreting this totalized covariance API as the intended second moment.
Apply the imported Poincaré estimate and substitute the energy identity: \[m\operatorname{Cov}_\mu(a,a)\le\|a\|^2.\] Since \(m>0\), division preserves the inequality and gives the required bound. This also covers \(a=0\) and the zero-dimensional space.
Both curvature bounds and the position \(L^{2}\) premise remain part of this exact Lean interface, although the final constant depends only on m. This proof neither establishes their sharp mathematical necessity nor produces the vector moment from scratch. The SPHMC posterior consumer separately supplies that moment before applying this lemma.
How the Lean proof follows these steps
The exact existing theorem is extracted with its own imports; its module and conclusion are not imported as a shortcut. The proof installs IsProbabilityMeasure \(μ\), introduces f as the continuous linear functional innerSL, derives MemLp f by hX.const_inner, and proves gradient f is constant through \(toDual_{gradient}\) and the genuine fderiv of innerSL. \(memLp_{const}\) supplies the gradient domain. GibbsC1Poincare gives the scalar variance estimate; henergy uses probability normalization. \(covarianceBilin_{self}\) and variance_eq_integral connect the actual covariance to that variance, then le_div_iff₀ hm performs the final positive division. These are imported ASTIS/Mathlib ingredients, not new Bench-owned lemmas.

What this does—and does not—verify
The aligned Lean target is exactly this isotropic directional covariance upper bound with the stated premises. It is not the full anisotropic Brascamp–Lieb inequality, a new proof of position \(L^{2}\), an invariant-law or sampling-complexity result. Prose explanations of API necessity and downstream roles are not extra Lean conclusions. No production declaration or Registry credit is added.
Existing library mathematics reused; no new mathematical leaf or paper-completion credit. The editorial panel records the exact current review scope and remaining unformalized explanation.
Sources, graph location and dependencies
Original library-grounded QA over the existing GibbsLinearCovarianceUpper proof. SmoothedPicardHMC.SmoothedHessianBounds.smoothed_hessian_bounds actually calls this producer for its RGO posterior covariance upper bound, corresponding to the upper-covariance ingredient of arXiv:2609.06906v1 §4.1, Lemma 4.1. The local route uses scalar Poincaré; it does not purport to reproduce an anisotropic statement not present in its target. The mathematical family is conservatively shared with the original smoothing-transfer audit sogb-026. No paper prose or restricted source is copied.
